I need a weapons expert, swords during the World War II pd. Japan.?

My grandfather's brother passed down a "katana" from when he was stationed in Japan to fight. The thing is, it does not look like a katana to me. The handle looks too ornate, a bit european to me. There are pictures on the blade, the blade reminds me of a katana but not the rest of it. Since there is rust
