How did the Japanese Samurai name their swords?
I'm wanting to know, and better yet, understand how the Samurai named their swords. I do understand that their swords were an extension of themselves, and therefor, if broken or lost they were dishonored and their family's aswell.
The reason I ask is because I am writing a novella about a particular samurai named Takashi Kien (Fictional not literal), and I'm trying to come up with a truly potent name for his sword.
Please, no insincere names like "Bob" or "George". I'm sure we can all be adults about this. Thank You.
In all likelihood, the sword names you refer to were probably just products of some poet's or writer's imagination. In the old days, before there were television, a warrior's reputation spread through word of mouth and stories which turn into urban legends. Usually some poet or writer made a poem or book about a legendary warrior and would sometimes add some exaggerated embellishments to make his poem or book more interesting to the listeners and readers. Naming a warrior's sword is a good way to enhance a character's legend and myth. Which is why you have stories about Arthur and "Excalibur", El Cid and " Tizona", Siegfried and "Gram", Atilla the Hun and the "Sword of Mars" ,etc in European literature and stories about the legendary swordsmith Masamune and his equally legendary swords and other stories like Sasaki Kojiro and the "Drying Pole" in Japanese literature. In most cases, these swords were either named in relation to their bearer's character or due to the sword's own unique qualities.
