Why are leaf crowns worn by a lot of greeks in ancient greek mythology, art, and in ancient greece itself?
In a lot of ancient greek mythology, art, and in ancient greece itself, i see a lot of paintings with greeks and greek gods wearing crowns made of leaves? why is this? is this just for decoration, or does this serve a purpose?
There are usually two types of 'leaf crowns used in Greek mythology and the art work of the Greeks. The first, more common, is the crown of Laurel leaves, these were woven and presented to the winners of contests, often athletic, but sometimes academic. The saying "resting on their laurels' comes from this time and was meant to describe a person who won something and then simply made the most out of the one win without going on to achieve anything else.
The other was a crown of Olive Leaves, which was the sacred tree of Athena. Only rulers and priests wore this crown.
