Question:
Was the senate of Rome justified in assassinating Julius Caesar? Why or why not?

No. Like other historical characters, Julius Caesar is a testament to the fact that in all this time, human nature has not changed.
Despite all his power and fame, many people can relate to what happened to him.

1. From the beginning, Caesar spent much time with the lower classes of Rome, unlike others. It must have been scary and unsanitary to do so in ancient Rome, but Caesar knew that it was important to pay attention to the needs of all the populace. The senate of Rome did not like his reforms because they were rich people who did not want to pay for the reforms of the poor people. These rich people also did not see why they should pay their debts. Caesar opposed their way of life and wanted them to pay up and pay attention to ALL the people of the empire, not just the rich. Keep in mind that others before Caesar tried to start reforms, and they got killed, too.

2. Caesar expanded the empire and supported Roman engineering and technology. If you drive around Europe today, you can see Romany structures still standing.

3. Caesar had an affair with Cleopatra that went sour on him. All his money and power could not help him when she went with another guy.

4. Caesar was also accused of being gay and liking guys. At this time, homosexuality in Rome was considered unmanly.

5. See that newspaper you are reading? Caesar was one of the first leaders to establish a newspaper.

6. See that calendar we all look at? Caesar saw the importance of it and made sure it was accurate enough for us to follow.

7. Caesar promoted pride in being a Roman and as well as he could and made sure his army was fed and compensated.

8. He was brutally murdered and betrayed by those he trusted.
Among his last words were, "Et tu, Brute?" Brutus was very close to Caesar and was either a very good friend or maybe even his son. But all his money and power could not stop this ultimate betrayal.

In spite of everything he did, and everything he tried, his social position and power did not stop him from getting a knife in his back. No, that selfish senate was not justified in killing Caesar. The senate thought that with Caesar gone, they would continue with the Republic. Since Caesar made himself emperor for life, the senate decided to kill him.

But all this had the opposite effect. The Republic ended and thus started a whole dang group of Caesars, both famous and infamous. Julius Caesar was dead, but there was no republic and a whole string of Caesars after him. The senators never thought that this would happen. Which just shows you what happens when you don't think ahead. The senate did an evil deed and got its just karma. Too bad.
