Corn snake bite? Fang fragments?
I was at a reptile expo last Sunday and while there I attended a snake sexing seminar. A younger child walked up to help the guy hold the first snake. Nothing, but as the kid started holding the male corn snake, he turned around and bit the kid. Well I stepped up to help and grabbed the snake myself. Only a few seconds later he came back around and bit my left thumb. Well its Thursday night and certain places on the bite are still extremely painful and irritated but a lot of it has healed up. I tried to bite down on a piece of dead skin and noticed it was hard. I finally removed it and it looked to me that it was a shard of a snake fang. Is it possible, and how would I remove whatever other pieces are left?
Treat it the same way you would a splinter. That's really the best advice I can give you. I had a carpet python tooth stuck in my hand a couple months ago and when I couldn't dislodge it, I just gave up and waited for it to be shed the same way a stubborn splinter is shed. Snake teeth are often curved as an adaption for gripping and holding prey items, so pulling away from a bite will only sink the teeth in further and almost guarantee ripping the teeth from the snake's mouth. If this ever happens again in the future, don't pull away. Instead, push your hand/finger/whatever further in before prying the mouth open and removing the caught extremity/digit from the snake. This will prevent excessive damage to you and to the snake.
Sorry to hear about the bite. If this happened during a sexing demonstration I'd be willing to bet whoever was sexing the animal wasn't doing it properly and hurt him or was using an animal that wasn't accustomed to being restrained and probed. Poor thing.
