Who were allowed a sword in the civil war?
I know not every soldier was given a sword so who were given one? officers right? what rank did they have to have? or do?. I was also watching pirates of the caribbean and the patriot and the red coats all had swords even just the enlisted soldiers. Were they all given one? I know that was the time of the revolutionary war and the french and indian war. Maybe I mistaken the scabbards they were wearing for holding their bayonet instead.
Are you speaking of a ceremonial saber or a weapon? The cavalry, all ranks, carried sabers. Ceremonial sabers have always been carried by officers. USMC NCOs also carried swords (ceremonial). In the Navy chief-petty-officers carry cutlasses. This cutlass is modeled after the boarding weapon of the Navy. I am not certain when the last ship to ship boarding was.
