Where's a good place for a silicon valley girl to go to in the south?

I'm 20 and I live in San Francisco where I smoke and drink and club and I've spent a few summers in LA. I love culture and cooking and traveling and partying and painting and science and movies. So stereotype away, I'm that kind of girl. I'm also jewish (culturally). I've always wanted to live in the deep south for a few month because I think it would be kind of funny and interesting and just such a change to actually be in a place I've always stereotyped as having an abundance of charming bible thumpers. Please take no offense, I'm genuinely curious about how the south really is. But if I was going to live a very very southern place that would still be fun for a young person and have really good food, where could I go? Someplace not too expensive would be nice too
I mean somewhere very dixie-ish if that makes sense, like not New Orleans

I've lived in the south nearly my entire life, and as someone who has also lived around LA and DC for a period of time, you should definitely try to live around Greenville and Charleston, SC, Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, or Chattanooga, TN. I wouldn't try Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana because of the oil spill and such right now. But the places listed are all awesome places to live and have a great time. Most of these cities are very clean, culturally mixed places having access to everything you would be used to that also have a southern charm to them. BTW most larger cities in the south now aren't nearly as stereotypical as people think. Also most big cities in the south will have a few synagogues and also other types of churches, Raleigh for instance has a large moslem population, so there is a lot of really good middle eastern food, hookah bars, and mosques.

If you want something a little off the beaten track that's still a great place to hang out, try Asheville, NC, Athens and Savannah, GA, and basically anywhere along the Smokey Mts. The western NC/SC and Eastern TN/GA areas are turning into the new east coast version of Cali, there's a big hipster movement to bringing culture to the mountains while maintaining the original southern feel of this area. You can find almost anything in these places while still feeling like you're out in the middle of nowhere.
